Always. & also…

* Alysha & Geb’s wedding! Beautiful & personal ceremony (with a sandwich-making unity portion, love it), game table & dancing, radiant happiness, celebration with good friends; golly I really really do love a wedding! * Corpse Party: no capstone this time, so part of the fun was seeing everyone else’s pieces in your thread for the first time, plus we had two performance pieces this round, and all over great art this time; * Flailing about Dark Tower with the gentleman—oh my goodness, I’m becoming obsessed with these books, it’s really ridiculous, but the worldbuilding and storytelling is just addictive, I don’t want to stop!; * rehearsals for Going Dark, especially playing with Evil sitting with John during scenes I’m not written into, mirroring everything he does & being terribly creepy; * “it probably speaks volumes about me that I think it’s easier to teach seduction than regality” and other self-aware comments this week; * plotting and planning for BHOF with Elsa (oh my gosh so close) & getting ready for San Francisco with Patrick (even closer!); * the gentleman’s spot on description of the latest Star Trek: “it was a really great Star Wars movie;” * slowly and surely creating my website(s) and getting them ready to launch; * longer planking times every time! * an organized and re-arranged room that feels bigger and makes me feel accomplished.

on one hand i love how obscure the time war is, because it leaves it all to the imagination but also…

i want a special <strike>not written by moffat</strike> that takes place towards the end of eight’s regeneration, when he realizes that he has to fight in the time war.

it would start out with eight on earth, then leaving it and witnessing the death of a child by a dalek, which spurs his involvement in the war. we see him shed his 19th century-style garb slowly through the first 15-20 minutes so that by the first third of the 90 minute special, he is in his leather jacket and stubble.

and there’s politics and riots and dalek remains in the streets and warfare and time lord clothes and massive red fields and silver leaves shivering, the shining world of the seven systems decaying and the doctor is horrified.

we watch his sanity slowly lessen, his rage amplify to the point where he becomes like the eye of the hurricane; he is calm and subdued and he knows what he has to do.

and he thinks that he’s going to lose his life in the war, that he’ll be sacrificing himself and he must because of the horrible atrocity he’s about to commit (meanwhile, we as viewers, know he survives). and he does it… the species are wiped out, TARDISes exploding, time lords and daleks burning. until there is nothing, nothing at all.

until we see our beloved TARDIS, stuck in a police box shape as usual, singed and floating, smoking rolling of her, but surviving nevertheless. and inside is the doctor, unconscious and visibly injured. he wakes, confused, until he recollects himself and realizes what he did. he stumbles to the console, then to the ship’s doors, which he flings open and sees nothing… gallifrey is gone, his people, his family, their history. what has he done?

but he only has seconds to process this. he is thrown back by his injured, which are quickly becoming more and more unbearable, and soon he realizes he is fatally wounded. his hands start to glow gold, but he holds the regeneration off, as painful as it looks.

the doctor looks out the doors again, immeasurably sad, and we the viewers realize that he does not want to regenerate… he wants to die for good for the sins he has committed. it is only fair after all, right?

but something happens in those last moments… maybe the TARDIS gives him a jolt, a slap on the hand to say how dare you and you aren’t leaving me here alone.

he loses control of the regenerative power and, collapsing, he bursts gold so bright and forceful that the screen is clouded, that we see nothing but light.

it slowly fades, the gold still pulsating at the center of the screen, until it completely disappears to reveal the ninth doctor, on his hands and knees, breathing heavily.

and that is where he begins, the doctor born in battle.

May 19, 2013

Mike Jeffries
c/o Abercrombie & Fitch
Abercrombie & Fitch Campus
6301 Fitch Path
New Albany, Ohio 43054

Hey Mike,

I know you’ve been flooded with mail regarding your comments on sizeism, but I wanted to take a second to write you about a project I’ve been working on.

As a preface: Your opinion isn’t shocking; millions share the same sentiment. You’ve used your wealth and public platform to echo what many already say. However, it’s important you know that regardless of the numbers on your tax forms, your comments don’t stop anyone from being who they are; the world is progressing in inclusive ways whether you deem it cool or not. The only thing you’ve done through your comments (about thin being beautiful and only offering XL and XXL in your stores for men) is reinforce the unoriginal concept that fat women are social failures, valueless, and undesirable. Your apology doesn’t change this.

Well, actually, that’s not all you have done. You have also created an incredible opportunity for social change.

Never in our culture do we see sexy photo shoots that pair short, fat, unconventional models with not short, not fat, professional models. To put it in your words: “unpopular kids” with “cool kids”. It’s socially acceptable for same to be paired with same, but never are contrasting bodies positively mixed in the world of advertisement. The juxtaposition of uncommonly paired bodies is visually jarring, and, even though I wish it didn’t, it causes viewers to feel uncomfortable. This is largely attributed to companies like yours that perpetuate the thought that fat women are not beautiful. This is inaccurate, but if someone were to look through your infamous catalog, they wouldn’t believe me.

I’ve enclosed some images for your consideration. Please let me know what you think.

A note: I didn’t take these pictures to show that the male model found me attractive, or that the photographer found me photogenic, or to prove that you’re an ostentatious dick. Rather, I was inspired by the opportunity to show that I am secure in my skin and to flaunt this by using the controversial platform that you created. I challenge the separation of attractive and fat, and I assert that they are compatible regardless of what you believe. Not only do I know that I’m sexy, but I also have the confidence to pose nude in ways you don’t dare. You are more than welcome to prove me wrong by posing shirtless with a hot fat chick; it would thrill me to see such a shoot.

I’m sure you didn’t intend for this to be the outcome, but in many ways you’re kind of brilliant. Not only are you a marketing genius (brand exclusivity really is a profitable move) but you also accidentally created an opportunity to challenge our current social construct. My hope is that the combination of these contrasting bodies will someday be as ubiquitous as the socially accepted ideal.

Ever so sincerely,
Jes

P.S. If you would like to offer me a “substantial amount” to stop wearing your brand so my association won’t “cause significant damage to your image”, don’t hesitate to email me. I respect you as a business man, and my agent and I would be happy to contribute in furthering your established success.

P.P.S. You should know your Large t-shirt comfortably fits a size 22. You might want to work on that.

If I have any political agenda when it comes to representing girls’ sexuality and desire, it’s that I want to describe it positively. I don’t know if “sex positive” is out of fashion these days, but the term still speaks to me. I think it’s OK — and even realistic — for girls to feel desire and to express it physically and with confidence. From the beginning.

They usually..."

“Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions.

Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time.

In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows:

The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.

In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts. This may sound outrageous, but think about how you react when precocious children dominate the talk at an adult party. As women begin to make inroads into formerly ‘male’ domains such as business and professional contexts, we should not be surprised to find that their contributions are not always perceived positively or even accurately.”

-
[x] (via neighborly)

As a teacher, I give girls what I hope is a lot of attention. I don’t know if I give girls their fair share, but I aspire to, especially after noticing that boys are willing to use their greater share of teachers’ attention to get girls who they feel aren’t being quiet and docile enough punished. I have therefore acquired a reputation for “caring more about the girls.” This has had two marked results: Some straight boys have gotten more hostile toward me, and most girls have gotten more confident around me. This makes me think I’m doing something right.

Longer thoughts on how this phenomenon relates to sexual harassment in classrooms, if you’re interested: The girls figured out I won’t report them if they hit boys who are sexually harassing them, I’ll only report the boys. This led to an increase in how often girls got the last word and boys got smacked in my classes, and, also, to a DECREASE IN HOW OFTEN GIRLS GOT SEXUALLY HARASSED. The sexual harassers seem to have been depending on the sort of “equal blame” and “retaliation is never warranted” and “don’t hurt others’ feelings” perspectives so many schools try to instill in kids; the sexual harassers were usually the ones bringing me into the situation by saying, “Miss, she hit me! You should write her up!” Once they figured out I was only ever going to respond, “If you don’t treat girls like that, they won’t hit you,” the girls got more confident and the sexual harassers largely shut the fuck up.

In schools, fighting against sexual harassment is often punished exactly the same as, or more severely than, sexual harassment — a lot of discipline codes make no distinction between violence and violence in self-defence, and violence is ALWAYS the highest level of disciplinary infraction, whereas verbal sexual harassment rarely is. Sexual harassers, at least in the schools I’ve been in, rely heavily on GETTING GIRLS IN TROUBLE WITH HIGHER AUTHORITIES as a strategy of harassment — creating an external punishment that penalises girls for and therefore discourages girls from fighting back. Sexual harassers are willing to use their greater share of floorspace to ask to get girls who won’t date them punished. By and large, teachers do punish those girls when they swear or hit. Schools condition girls to ignore sexual harassment by punishing them when they speak up or fight back instead.

Once the sexual harassers in my classes understood that girls wouldn’t be punished for rejecting them, they backed off around me. And there started to be a flip in what conversations I get called into — girls are telling me when boys are being nasty (too loud and dominant), instead of boys telling me when girls are being uncooperative (louder and more dominant than boys think they should be).

I just had the sweetest, tiniest women come into the store. They were both easily in their eighties, hair done up in curls, matching outfits, an entire barrel of perfume each. I thought, okay, they think the old toy store is still in this building…

AND THEN THEY SCHOOLED ME. I did not know Hawkgirl ever had her own miniseries. Not only did they inform me of that, but also who wrote and drew it, when it came out, and how many issues there were. They then proceeded to buy up all of our Hawkgirl, some silver age Flash, a bunch of our Batman merch, and then some.

One in particular told me that when she broke her shoulder, she had her physo-therapist put a picture of Hawkgirl up on the high wall so she could reach for it every day, to help her healing. Because, she told me, if Hawkgirl can swing a mace, she can too.

Some men who want to compliment random women on the street are creepy predators. Most are somewhere in between, and guess what? I don’t know you, I don’t know your life, and I have no idea if you’re going to leave it at “Hey, you look good in that dress!” or follow it up with “But you’d look better without it! Har har! C’mon, where’re you going? I know you heard me! Fucking cunt, nobody wants your fat ass anyway, bitch.”

When you compliment a random woman who doesn’t know you, no matter how nice you are about it, there’s a good chance she’s going to freak out internally because for all she knows, you could be that latter type. And I get that it’s really unfair that women would just assume that about you. I get that it sucks that sometimes, expressing totally reasonable opinions like “hey you’re hot” will make women terrified of you or furious at you. That’s not fair.

But if you’re going to lay the blame for that somewhere, for fuck’s sake, don’t blame the woman. Blame all the guys who have called her a bitch and a cunt for ignoring their advances. Blame all the guys who may have harassed, abused, or assaulted her in the past. Blame all the people who may never do such a thing themselves, but who were quick to blame her and tell her to just get over it. Blame the fact that if she stops and talks to you and then something bad happens, people will blame her for stopping and talking to you.”

-
Why You Shouldn’t Tell That Random Girl On The Street That She’s Hot » Brute Reason (via brute-reason)

^^^^^^^^^^^^

(via misandry-mermaid)

You know, I’ll go a step further and say - there are no “men who want to compliment random women on the street [who] are genuinely good guys who just don’t understand why their comments might be unwelcome.” There are guys who pretend that they don’t understand why their comments are unwelcome. But the man who whistles out his car window at me while I’m waiting for a light, the guy who stares at me while I ride past on my bike, the guy who says “Hey beautiful!” at me and my friend as we’re talking at an outdoor cafe - none of those guys want to make me feel good.

Not a single one.

I keep hearing about this guy! The good guy who catcalls and doesn’t get how it’s wrong, the nice guy who just wants to tell you you have beautiful eyes. And every time I’m told about that guy, it’s so that I don’t react, don’t glare, don’t respond negatively. Because who knows! Maybe he really super meant it in his heart and was just trying to pay you a compliment.

Because here’s the thing - here’s how I know that the nice guy ain’t real; because I always do react, always glare, always respond negatively. I always say, “No, that wasn’t okay. Don’t do that to me again.” And a nice guy? Would come back with, “Oh, man, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. You’re right. I won’t do that again.” A nice guy who didn’t get it would say, “Wow, I didn’t think about it that way. Is this something that you think a lot of women feel?”

And that never happens - what happens is I get called names, or have coffee thrown at my face, or get shoved up against a wall, or get followed for fifteen blocks, or get shouted out from six inches away by a man who’s six inches taller and fifty pounds bigger than I am. What happens is that I’m shown, again and again and again, that these “compliments” are prologues to a story this guy’s just desperate to tell, the story of him scaring me, hurting me, making sure I know my place. And he can tell the story as loud as he wants, because he can always fall back on, “I’m a good guy! She’s the one who started it! I was just trying to pay the bitch a compliment.”

So stop telling me that there are good guys out there who just don’t understand, because there aren’t. What there are, are guys who will pretend to be good guys, right up until you don’t smile at them. And then they show who they really are.

So I have a lot of feelings every single time I hear that people are “angry” or “annoyed” or whatever that they can’t find ONE SINGLE YA BOOK IN THE ENTIRE YA SECTION FOR BOYS TO READ and YOUNG MEN ARE FAILING BECAUSE GIRLS ARE TAKING OVER LITERATURE and HOW CAN BOYS POSSIBLY BE EXPECTED TO WANT TO TOUCH WHINY GIRLY CRAP WITH A TEN FOOT POLE?????

I have a few thoughts.

1) If you cannot find at least a handful of books in the YA section that might appeal to a teenage boy, you aren’t looking very hard. Maybe peruse this list of 140 titles that would appeal to teenage boys. Also, that list is from last year and similar books are being released every month.

2) LOLOLOLOLOL okay yeah young boys have absolutely nothing to read, you’re right. It’s not like you can walk into any library or bookstore and find that the majority of the books in it are about white men.

3) I resent the implication that a book with a female protagonist OR romantic element, no matter how slight, is a “girl book” unless it’s by some guy who gets really upset when anyone calls him a romance author because HIS BOOKS ARE NOT ROMANCES THEY ARE ~SERIOUS LITERATURE~ because the two are mutually exclusive. I also resent that we continue to encourage our boys to distance themselves vehemently and often violently from anything that could be considered even slightly non-masculine.

There is this thing people say: “My son/brother/I had nothing in the YA section to read! They/I had to go STRAIGHT FROM KID’S BOOKS TO LORD OF THE RINGS/WHEEL OF TIME/ENDER’S GAME/CATCHER IN THE RYE/ETC.!”

Wow. I mean, do you understand what a tragedy it is that these poor boys don’t even get to stop in the YA section and they are forced to go immediately to the thousands and thousands and thousands of fantasy and science fiction and ~real literature~ books that are about young white men coming of age and having adventures? Greatest tragedy of our generation, honestly.

I mean doesn’t anyone find it a little… odd? That the fantasy and sci-fi shelves are bursting with young 16-25 year old men who are doing lots of different things (including kissing/sexing ladies OH MY GOD ROMANCE???!!!!?!?!!?), and then the YA section is hanging out over here with lots of stories with VERY SIMILAR CONTENT (Kristin Cashore! Tamora Pierce! Beth Revis!), but everyone looks at those books and goes “Ugh, girl books, there’s no possible way a young man or even a smart girl could be into those?”

TAMORA PIERCE LITERALLY WRITES ABOUT KNIGHTS AND MAGIC AND FANTASY CREATURES AND WAR AND SASSY ANIMAL SIDEKICKS. She just writes about them from a *girl’s* perspective. Which means boys are physically incapable of reading it, I guess?

I just can’t wrap my brain around the fact that people do not get the irony in what they’re saying. They don’t even realize as the words are rolling off their tongue that YA is so female-centric because coming-of-age stories for young men have already been staples in the “real books” section for decades. Because being a young straight white man is universal, see, while being a girl is something that’s impossible to care about unless you’re both a girl and stupid. (COOL GIRLS read the boy stuff, duh!)

And even then, even then, there’s still plenty of boy-centric YA, too. Because there is no boy-free space, you guys. That’s the thing about privilege — you’re so used to being allowed in every space and have everyone accept you as the default that when you can’t immediately find something that’s obviously “for you,” you claim that it’s excluding you and that you must be included. You don’t even see that you can literally sidestep into another area that is catered exactly to you.

Honestly, to a point, this is not even the fault of young men. It is the fault of a society that continues to tell them that they’re the most important of all. Boys don’t start out believing that they can’t relate to girls, or that romance is sappy and beneath them. They’re not born with the idea that sex is a game or they’re “naturally” better at certain things. We feed them that. And we continue to feed it to them every time we huff about there being no “boy stuff” in YA, which is a flat-out, complete and total lie.

Of course, at a certain point they can reason on their own, and then it’s on them whether they’re willing to learn some empathy, just as it’s on any other privileged class.

There is so much more to this, like the fact that patriarchy often drips from those so-called “girl books,” even though they’re “for girls.” That publishers literally can’t afford to be idealists and they have to take society and money into consideration, and how much that sucks.

I have said this before, and I doubt I’ll stop saying it: if young men aren’t reading, it is not because of women and their stupid girl books. There are other elements at work here, because there has never and will never be a “lack” of books written by dudes for dudes. Please try again.

In the meantime, I might segue into the way we pish-posh “romance” and sex if it’s written by women, but that’s another post.

& for all the things that made me happy the last two weeks, despite the rough times:

* Seeing Good Things: The Trial at NCTC, which had the best pre-play set up I’ve seen in a while, plus I got to sit with Theresa & use her extra ticket at a sold out show; the little kids performing a Nikola Tesla show; Taming of the Shrew, funnier and tighter and hotter than before (yes really, and I never like this play); a middle school production of Grease, with my favorite teenager Duncan as Danny Zuko (brilliant); Great Gatsby with Kimble on an impromptu Opinions Date; & of course, PENTATONIX, holy shit they are SO GOOD and even better LIVE I can’t handle it. Goddamn, the things they do with their voices (and cello, for that one part with Kevin, and Avi sang the Hobbit song, and and and.)

* Theater: Bill’s Bash, full of great theater people; getting the script & starting to look over lines for Going Dark; planning for Dracula; new headshots with John Ulman, a most fabulous photographer, & actually liking quite a few of them (this is new for me).

* Writing Shame: I finished my full first draft of Elysian Road. Yes, really. kjbakjsdbkjagsdfaf.

* & etc: dogsitting Eddie, the world’s most adorable corgi; sunny afternoon time with Allie helping me with my new website; Kentucky Derby party with big hats; hot hot sunny weather to wear shorts and sandals in (it’s back to grey now, but it was like a teaser trailer for summer); planning BHOF with Elsa; ladytime at Stitch n Bitch; giant salads with chicken; new novels to read; tea; the gentleman, as always.

So my mom and I watched the Canadian tv show Slings and Arrows recently and quite enjoyed it! There are a lot of interesting faces in the show so I decided to waste some time doing these watercolor doodles of some of my favorite characters. Most of these are from the main cast, but some have much smaller roles — I just like them.

Characters from left to right:

Oliver Welles. “You’re talking to a ghost! Wake up and smell the coffin!” — Geoffrey Tennant. “You stay in the theater because you don’t wanna starve to death? Now that is irony.” — Ellen Fanshaw. “Oh God. And I’m alone, just me and my dehydrated chameleon.”

Darren Nichols. “Life is just fucking nuts, isn’t it?” — Richard Smith-Jones. “Darren! Everyone cries when they’re stabbed. There’s no shame in that!” — Maria. “Because all stage managers are pot-smoking lesbians, right?”

Frank and Cyril. — Anna Conroy. “Sometimes it’s best to just work through the tears. That’s what I do.” — Jerry.

Nahum. “I must confess — I love drama!” — The Mortimer Brothers. “We’ve never removed a head before.”
